Project Goals
Goals of this project include assisting and guiding the outpatient center of the Centro Policlinico De Agua Grande in establishing a complete medical operations system; improving the medical working environment and professional compensation; increasing the morale of medical personnel; and raising the quality of medical services. The Lobata and Lemba provinces will be assisted in strengthening drug and medical management capabilities. Regular clinical training classes will be held for various departments. Regional medical networks will be established. These efforts will improve the qualifications of local medical personnel and improve the country's public health environment.
Annual Targets
Medicines and medical supplies will be regularly provided to medical stations throughout the country's provinces and districts. Free clinics will be provided on a monthly basis in remote locations where the Taiwan technical mission is operating. Outpatient clinic portion: Output dentistry and acupuncture departments will be established, and training provided to assistant technicians. The outpatient center will be given medicines and medical supplies, and a fund for their purchase established. The local authorities will be helped to manage and utilize the collected fees. A registration system and patient medical history system will be planned and implemented. A gynecology department will be established and outpatient ultrasound services offered, while training will be provided to assistants. Assistance will be provided in setting up an X-ray room and operating system. An electrocardiogram examination room will be set up and nursing personnel trained. A testing department will be established. Acupuncture, gynecology, dentistry, and pediatric internal medicine departments will be established and provided with guidance. Medical supplies will be provided and assistance given in improving children's nutrition.

Project Content
Overall, improving facilities at the Centro Policlinico de Aqua Grande outpatient center will make it Sao Tome and Principe's most modern and best-equipped medical center. This will allow a significant increase in the number of patients served. Human and material resources will be committed at appropriate times to help the Central Hospital conduct free clinics in outlying provinces and districts. Apart from upgrading medical equipment, the mission will assist the Centro Policlinico in outpatient treatment and medical administrative tasks.
Program Update
Outpatient center component
A registration and examination system, and a patient history management system were established.
The establishment, management and utilization of a fee system and corresponding fund were guided.
Local personnel were assisted in managing a medical and drug fund; specialized technical personnel were trained; an AIDS screening department was established; a gynecological and obstetric outpatient surgery room was established.
Short-term acupuncture training was provided.
Peripheral component
The establishment of regional medical functions in the Lobata and Lemba provinces was supported.
Resource aid and administrative support was provided to the Neves Hospital, making it the backup hospital for the medical network in the western half of São Tomé and Principe.
Dental and medical services in the Central Hospital were supported.
Free medical services component
Free medical service visits and follow-up treatment in the Caue, Me, Zoxi and Cantagalo provinces were provided, which aided in the establishment of basic regional medical networks.
Regular classes on acupuncture, oral health and drug management were provided.
Medical stations in outlying areas were repaired and restored.
Progress Update
Taiwan Medical Mission in the Islands of São Tomé and Principe
In 2006, the mission set up registration and medical records management systems at the Centro Policlinico de Agua Grande. A fee receipts system was also introduced, and drug management and administrative systems were strengthened. Ultrasound and electrocardiograph rooms were set up, and the Department of Acupuncture was opened. Education and training courses were provided for health officers, acupuncturists, and dental technicians. So far, there have been four people trained in acupuncture and 8 in dental training. Overall, 24,831 patients received treatment at Centro Policlinico de Agua Grande. In rural areas, the mission improved community-based medical services and networks in the Lobata and Lemba provinces. Renovations were completed at both the Neves Hospital and Gudalupe Clinic and a mobile clinic was established in Caue province.

Project Content
Working with the Chad Ministry of Health in the Freedom Hospital in the capital city, N'Djamena, this mission will provide and improve medical services.
Progress Update
Medical Service Project
The Medical Mission conducts regular outpatient clinic for surgical, gynecological, pediatrics, and medical patients at the Freedom Hospital located in the capital city. It also accepts referrals of complicated surgical cases from all other hospitals. A special thyroid clinic has been opened to the general public, working along the Ministry of Health's objective to reduce the high prevalence of endemic goiter as a major health problem in Chad. Public health education given directly to affected patient during outpatient consultation, with the objective of reducing the prevalence of all preventable tropical infectious diseases like malaria, typhoid, amebiasis, infectious gastroenteritis, and intestinal parasitism etc., it is hope that by increasing patient's awareness, they will be able to disseminate precious health information regarding preventive measures to the community. The Mission performs regular major surgery, and conducts clinical teaching in the operating theatre with the objective of transferring professional skill to resident surgeons and medical students, particularly with regards to more specialized operation for the head and neck, breast, and colo-rectal pathology. The Mission personnel conduct clinical teachings to surgical nursing staff and Red Cross volunteers during regular surgical ward rounds.

Project Content
ICDF personnel will support medical he Friendship Hospital in Koudougou, transferring knowledge and technology to the hospital, and improving the hospital's medical standards and the area's public health, safety and harmony. Free clinical services will be provided in areas where the technical mission is operating, and support will be provided at appropriate times to small and medium-sized medical stations.
Program Update
The Friendship Hospital was assisted in serving 2,400 dental patients and provided support in internal medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, anesthetics and surgery.
Regular and irregular outreach medical services were provided.
Progress Update
Taiwan Medical Mission in Burkina Faso
In 2005, the Medical Mission conducted regular and irregular outpatient clinics for surgical gynecological, pediatrics and medical patients at the Friendship Hospital. In order to improve local medical services, the mission also conducted numerous medical conferences and training courses. So far, the Medical Mission treated 7,914 patients in internal medicine, gynecology, anesthetics, pediatrics and surgery.
