President Chen Inspects National Health Institute's Anti-Avian Flu Drug Production Facility

PhotoPresident Chen Shui-bian inspected the National Health Institute (NHI) Chunan Branch on the morning of March 3, congratulating the scientists on having grasped the know-how in developing tamiflu and giving directions for further preventive work.

 "Your achievement is beneficial to society and promotes international collaboration in disease prevention, for you have fully grasped the know-how and developed self-production capacity," the president said in his remarks delivered to the medical and epidemiological scientists at the NHI Chunan Branch.

 "Even better," the president added, "the government has prepared adequate materials for the production of the drug in order to reach the standard storage level recommended by the World Health Organization." The World Health Organization has suggested that every country's tamiflu storage should reach at least 10 percent of its population.

 The president also visited the laboratories for producing tamiflu and anti-H5N1 vaccines at the branch institute. "We will continue to take a dual-approach, that is, purchasing and self-production, to acquire related drugs and vaccines," the president told the scientists, and reminded them to keep track on any variations of virus strains.

 Besides medication and vaccination, the president nonetheless emphasized to the professionals and experts the importance of long-term public education and promotion campaigns in regard to disease prevention.

 The National Health Institute has been founded for ten years. Before he concluded the visit, the president asked Premier Su Tseng-chang, who also joined the visit, to assist the institute in solving the problems and challenges it has encountered in the past decade.
