Mr. Miroslav Ouzky, Chairman of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament, and Ms. Magdalena Frischová, Head of the Office of Dr. Ouzky, will visit Taiwan from July 2-6 at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During his trip, Chairman Ouzky will call on President Chen Shui-bian, President of the Legislative Yuan, Wang Jin-pyng, and attend a luncheon hosted by Dr. Yang Tzu-pao, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. He will visit the Government Information Office, the Mainland Affairs Council, the Department of Health, the Environmental Protection Administration, the Bureau of National Health Insurance, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, the Democratic Progressive Party Headquarters and the Kuomintang Headquarters. This most respected guest of Taiwan will also visit other iconic locations in northern and southern Taiwan, such as the National Palace Museum, Taipei 101 and Kenting.
Chairman Ouzky is an important friend of Taiwan and has great influence on other members of the European Parliament over supporting Taiwan’s bid to join the World Health Organization (WHO). On June 20, 2007, Chairman Ouzky released a Press Statement in the European Parliamentary Assembly held in Strasbourg, demanding that the WHO include Taiwan in the implementation of its International Health Regulations (IHR), which came into effect on June 15, 2007. He also called on Dr. Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization, to take immediate action to establish a national focal point in Taiwan, so that the world heath system can be fully prepared to prevent and combat the threat of epidemic diseases.
Chairman Ouzky is deeply impressed with Taiwan’s sound national health insurance system and intends to promote bilateral medical exchange between Taiwan and European countries. By visiting local hospitals, Chairman Ouzky can further understand the comprehensiveness of Taiwan’s national health insurance coverage and the convenience of the e-chip health insurance cards.(E)
